The catalog “Berindei: Edification”, which accompanied the temporary exhibition of the same name, presents for the first time the work of one of the lesser-known artists of contemporary art. The research focuses on understanding and analyzing the role played by Gheorghe Berindei in the Romanian art scene – an eminence of the entire neo-orthodox movement in art and national culture, which gained momentum between the ’60s and ’80s. With a body of work of restricted dimensions, created in secrecy and with extreme dedication, Berindei held only one solo exhibition during his lifetime, in 1987, at the Căminul Artei gallery. Berindei exemplifies the assimilation of modernity into tradition, under the pressure of social trauma during the dictatorship, along with engagement in private spiritual performance, in order to synthesize or crystallize a crucial cultural and human formula in the rebirth of consciousness from the ashes of totalitarianism.
